This is going to be a bit more basic level tutorial video but I have some more in depth stuff planned for upcoming videos! Then we are going to look at some BIOS settings and after that run through the installation process together. Right, so to get started we need to download the newest version of proxmox.

On the download page download the ISO file, we are going to use the 6. Once both are downloaded and etcher is installed, insert your USB stick Anything 1GB or more should be fine and start etcher.

Once booted you should be greeted with the following screen. There hit the first option to Install Proxmox. Then we get to the storage configuration for where you want to install Proxmox. Here we are going to make a few changes! As you can see all the disks Proxmox detects are now shown and we want to select the SSDs of which we want to create a mirror and install Proxmox onto.

Then we want to do a little tweaking in the advanced options. Only change compression from on to LZ4.

Then we also want to change the hdsize value. Set a password and enter an e-mail address. This address is important because the server will send you messages when something is wrong! Select the correct network card you connected and make sure to fill in a correct FQDN hostname like you see here. Once the installation is done, Promxox should automatically boot. Since we are running a mirror, make sure to select both so that if one fails it will still boot from the other one!

Almost done with all the basics! First we are going to make sure you can update Proxmox to the latest version. To do that we need to enable to community repository. To do this we log into the web interface, the address and port number for this are listed on the screen. The first time you will get a security warning, you can ignore this safely.

I've found a couple of write-ups that work around this by formatting the solaris reserved partition as vfat and installing EFI grub there -- is this the way to do this or is there something else I should be doing?

Last edited: Mar 17, After reading a bit more I settled on just kicking this script snippet off after installing and it seems to work. I'm still not sure if I'm doing the "correct" thing by re-using the solaris reserved partition apparently it's reserved for EFI use, so this should be fine? I actually had legacy boot shut off when I performed the install, so I was a bit confused when the machine failed to boot after removing the USB key. I worked around the legacy boot by booting rescue mode from the install stick and making the changes above. I see.

So do i understand you right, you didn't use the rEFInd my first encounter with it, very very useful utility and was able to fix the EFI partition with grub-install by rebooting into the already installed Proxmox using the installer USB? Dec 10, 11 5 8 This is not recommended for ZFS — you end up having a hardware raid controller underneath ZFS and that is begging for problems. I should not have worried — all is good — supports up to 6GB with Dell firmware and the backplane firmware is fine as-is. Standard disclaimer — this worked for my hardware. It was correct as of It may erase your drives, lose your data, etc.

You are responsible for reading and understanding whether this makes sense for you to try and for protecting yourself. Instructions: 1. Download Proxmox 2. Clear ZFS from previously used disks If you have used ZFS on the disks before, it is highly likely that the partition scheme needs to be zapped in order not to cause problems. The Proxmox install process is going to build 3 partitions — 1 is a small BIOS boot partition, 2 is the zfs partition and you will get partition 9 Solaris reserved that we will repurpose as an EFS EFI partition Fill in your geo location, ip address, email, and password Complete Install Reboot computer Upon reboot, use F11 to select the flash drive and follow the procedure in the step below Rescue Procedure to get into chroot — ths is so you can complete EFI setup.

Boot up the Proxmox Rescue Environment Rescue Procedure This procedure can be used for maintenance to the debian environment from outside the actual environment. Reboot the system from UEFI into Proxmox If you were unable to export the rpool in the above step, the reboot will exit into busybox during the boot process.

ZFS can normally unmount but for some reason not in proxmox. You will have to do this step. Busybox is just a limited command environment with a subset of commands available. The boot will drop you into a screen with a prompt and you can type the 2 commands below.

Enter this command: zpool import -N -f rpool exit 9. Fix the raid references on the boot array This step is problematic no matter what choice you make. However, be warned — if you do lock it down to a unique device identifier, you will not be able to use the proxmox installer to get back in if anything ever glitches — and that is a big problem.

Things break and mine has at times. Alternatively, you can do this: remove the disk and then re-attach it. It works fine on plain debian 9 but not in proxmox bare-metal Check what it is currently using by this: zpool status zpool offline rpool sdc2 zpool detach rpool sdc2 zpool attach rpool sdb2 ata-mylongdrivenamec-part2 wait for resilvering to complete — check with zpool status zpool offline rpool sdb2 zpool detach rpool sdb2 zpool attach rpool ata-mylongdrivenamec-part2 ata-mylongdrivenameb-part2 The total process took a long time as we only had mbps of bandwidth between the three data centers free for this project.

The actual hands-on-keyboard time took a matter of minutes for both VMs. Hyper-V has a great snapshot and replication feature. The first step is to export the VM so you can have one vhdxx virtual drive to transfer and convert.

If you can use the GUI, this is a few clicks away. This step is really easy, especially if you exported the VM to a network share location. Since the transfer was likely many GB in size and we are going Windows to Linux, it is always good to check that the vhdx image does not have errors before proceeding. Why the step with qcow2 when you want to use ceph anyways where one would typically use raw format? J Copeland You need to convert file in Linux using qemu-img, not Windows.

Then it will work fine. I tried this. Blue screen?
